Welcome to Sherlock

This is a crowdsourcing game ‐ You will work as an individual within your group to answer 36 questions.

Your group is in competition with another other group for the highest group score.

Use the app to submit as many answers as you can to the 36 questions you will be assigned.

You can view a list of these questions by clicking the "?" in the upper right corner.

The app also provides you with a dashboard, which you can access by clicking on the grid of dots in the upper left corner.

Each question is represented by a square in your dashboard. You can see the question by clicking on the square.

Each square begins gray (no answers have been submitted) and can turn amber (not enough answers have been submitted), green (enough agreeing answers have been submitted), or red (conflicting answers / not enough agreeing answers). Your group gets one point for each answer you get to GREEN on the dashboard.

To find answers to these questions, you will visit a number of locations on a map.

You are represented on this map as a red dot, and the additional dots are your teammates. Navigate the map using your arrow keys, by clicking on the provided arrows, or by simply clicking on a location on the map.

When you enter those locations, you'll find posters with clues to help you answer the questions.

Look out for these six characters:

Giraffe
Hippopotamus
Lion
Zebra
Leopard
Elephant

To gain points, answer the questions in complete, simple sentences. You can tell the app things like:

You can also ask the app things like:

Once you begin, you will have 10 minutes to collect and enter answers. Remaining time will be shown in the lower left corner.

for your group we are simulating a bad network connection: you will be offline until the end of the game.

Your dashboard will be only grey and amber, and your score will stay zero until the end!

Once your 10 minutes run out, we will reconnect you with your group members and the dashboard will then show the status of the questions answered by your group. Here you will be shown your score, as well as the score of the group you are competing against.

Once your 10 minutes run out, we will compare your score to that of the group you are competing against.

To continue begin the game, press "Next". If you wish to return to these instructions at any point, you may press the ⓘ button above the app, but keep in mind that the timer will not be paused.

Thank you for participating in our study!

Your data will help us better understand how human users and computation agents interact in groups of varying size, under varying degrees of time pressure, and with reliable/unreliable network connectivity.
