Introduction

Welcome and thank you for taking part in our study. This study investigates new technologies to automatically process textual information in a format that is most useful to the human user. We call this 'Human-Assisted Machine Information Exploitation' (HAMIE). The study begins to address the question: Can a 'machine' identify the most important pieces of information a human user needs to answer a question quickly and accurately?

As a participant in the study, you will take on the role of an Intelligence Analyst tasked by your Commander to find the answer to an important question which impacts the direction of the mission. In order to answer the Commander's question you will need to analyze information contained in a variety of documents and reports.

Before beginning your duty as Intelligence Analyst, please complete a short demographic questionnaire.

Demographics

The Mission

You are serving as a 35F Intelligence Analyst in the 307th Engineer Battalion responsible for conducting human terrain mapping near Kandahar, Afghanistan. Your battalion has recently arrived on station with little knowledge about the area or local persons of interest.

The unit's mission is to reduce the regional influence of drug trafficking and promote support for the Afghan national government.

As a 35F Intelligence Analyst the majority of your time is spent analyzing data and preparing summaries to assist the battalion Commander in mission critical decisions.

The data you will need to analyze is collected from a variety of sources.

To analyze the above sources of information a sequence of three processing tasks must be performed.

The first task is called annotation. Annotation is the highlighting or labeling of specific words and phrases in the text. The purpose of annotation is to identify important portions of the text so the reader can summarize the text more easily and determine if it contains useful information. The highlighted words are called 'entities' and 'attributes'. There are many different types of entities. Some common examples of entity types are people, organizations, locations, events, dates, and times. An attribute can be thought of as a characteristic or feature of an entity.

For example in this sentence 'Soldier' is an entity and 'Humvee' is an attribute.

The
Entity
Soldier
drives the
Attribute
Humvee
down the road.

The second task is called relation identification. Typically, a relationship exists between entities and attributes identified in the annotation task. For example, in the sentence "The Soldier drives the Humvee down the road.", Soldier is an entity and Humvee is an attribute. The relationship between the entity and attribute is 'drives'. Identifying the relationships between entities and attributes increases understanding of the document's content.

For example in this sentence 'drives' is the relation.

The
Entity
Soldier
drives
Relation
the
Attribute
Humvee
down the road.

The third task is called a link diagram. The link diagram visualizes the relationships between entities and attributes in the form of a network visualization using 'nodes' and 'links'. The links represent relationships connecting the nodes (entities and attributes). The nodes are circles containing the name of the entity or attribute. The line connecting two nodes, the link, is labeled with the relationship. For example here is the relation represented as a node-link diagram called a dyad:

Node
Soldier
Link
drives
Node
Humvee

When the entity or attribute labels of a node match, the dyads can be merged to create a network diagram. For example here is how the above dyad would fit into a network diagram:

Kandahar
Located
Soldier
Member of
Drives
Humvee
Property of
307th

Don't worry if this sounds complicated. A robot assistant named HAMIE will help you with each of the three processing tasks!

The Commander has just handed you an urgent Intelligence Information Request (IIR) which directly impacts the mission!!!

Your job is to analyze the data collected so far using the help of HAMIE.

The Commander needs to make a mission critical decision in 30 minutes! He is depending on your answer to the IIR.
