Scenario

Adam Vogel11 is the founder and organizational leader of Anarchic Calling, a radical political group based in Liverpool that the government has designated as a terrorist organization due to its history of violent attacks. Vogel11 receives the majority of the group's funding from Frano Perez12 and Javier Sosa13, a pair of wealthy Argentine business executives who oppose British claims to the Falkland Islands. Jamie Webber10, one of the coordinators of Anarchic Calling, was one of the first to join after the group's formation. As such, he communicates directly with Vogel11 on all matters. Last year, Webber 10 recruited Suku Ncube9 to be the organization's lead propaganda director, which includes such formats as radical books, magazines, YouTube videos, and audio recordings. In creating these materials, Ncube9 works very closely with Maxim Johnson8, who is the group's primary recruiter. Vogel 11 also communicates directly with Manj Patel14, who manages an internet blog for the organization (which serves as an additional means of recruitment). In recent months, Vogel11 has been working with Tyrone Bishop15 to coordinate a domestic attack to be carried out at Anfield Stadium during a soccer match. Johnson8 recruited Zeb Mason7, a 26-year old anti-establishment engineering student, to lead the attack. Mason7 received his briefing on the plan's details from Bishop 15, who also tasked him with forming a small team to assist in carrying out the bombing. The team includes: Marshall Wyman5, a fellow extremist who Mason 7 met at political rally; Wei Liu6, a 23-year old college dropout who is notorious in the Liverpool underworld for his bomb-making abilities; Neal Singh4, a 29 year-old taxi driver who would provide transportation for the mission; and Lionel2 and Nat Ferns3, brothers that Mason7 met on a radical internet forum who recently served time for assault and battery. Lionel2 and Nat3 are tasked with acquiring automatic weapons for the attack, which they will shortly receive from Ibrahim Ahmed1, an old prison contact.

Jacob7 is married to Liz6 and they have three children, Danielle 2, Jack4, and Darryl5. Danielle 2 is in a domestic partnership with Kim3, who is close with everyone in Danielle's2 family. Together Danielle2 and Kim3 are adopting a baby girl, Ling1. Wilson 8, whose second cousin is Jacob7, is now married to Janis 9. Ty10 is Janis'9 stepson from a previous marriage. He still lives with his dad and hasn't met Wilson8. Wilson's 8 half-sister, Ivonne11, is Ty's 10 teacher. Ivonne11 and Noah14 were once married, but they got divorced several years ago. Since then, Ivonne11 married Cameron12 and together they had a daughter, Emma13. Ivonne's 11 best friend is Alice15, whose estranged older brother is Jacob7.

In addition to playing basketball, Hugo 11 also uses his free time to play rock music with his friends Naomi 12 and Anders13. Hugo11 learned how to play guitar when he took lessons with Peter14. Hugo11 is now married to Jane15, who is training to get her private pilot's license. Jane 15, who grew up in Shreveport, used to be best friends with Fernando 7 before they both moved away to attend different colleges.

Evelyn Schroeder15 is the chief administrator of a small hospital in northern New Hampshire. She works closely with both Libang Zhong7, the director of the clinical department, as well as Frank Walton11, who supervises the administrative department. Mr. Walton11 collaborates with Darcy Malina12 and Jeremiah Saville13, who together manage the hospital's finances. James Westby14, who runs security for the hospital, also works with Mr. Walton11. Tony Silva8 is in charge of patient transportation for the hospital, and as such he must coordinate with both Mr. Walton11 and Director Zhong7 on a daily basis. Additionally, Mr. Silva8 communicates with Martha Jameson9, the head receptionist, to ensure that the front desk is kept up to date on the whereabouts of all patients brought in via ambulance. Mrs. Jameson9 often has to contact Vivek Kumar10, the hospital's IT manager, any time there is a problem with the computer system. Mr. Kumar10 also gets his orders directly from Mr. Walton11. As head of the clinical department, Director Zhong7 constantly interacts with the hospital's doctors and nurses. Dr. Chloe Pieterson5 is a primary care physician and senior doctor at the hospital. She is currently training Dr. Matthew Spiro4, who is a junior doctor. Both Dr. Pieterson5 and Dr. Spiro4 work closely with doctors Eliza Yang3 and Tal Cohen2, who are surgeons. All of the doctors and surgeons at the hospital have worked with Amy Vassey6, who is the clinic's senior nurse.

Mohammed Irfhan7, the radical imam of a London mosque, has recently been recruiting young men (and women) to serve as foreign fighters in Iraq and Syria. Aahil Khan4 and his sister Sana5 have attended the mosque for years, and have recently convinced their friend Imran Bakr6 to join. Thomas2 and Michael Huxley3, brothers who both grew up Protestant, recently converted to Islam after listening to recordings of some of Mohammed Irfhan's7 more extremist material. They are the newest additions to the mosque. Together the Huxley siblings2 & 3, the Khan siblings 4 & 5, and Imran6 have been attending an increasing number of Imam Irfhan's7 Salafist talks. Upon noticing the extreme change in the personalities of Thomas2 and Michael3, their mother, Elizabeth 1, has tried repeatedly to intervene but to no avail. Abdullah Siddiqui8, a former student of Mohammed Irfhan's7 teachings, has been fighting for ISIS in Syria since August 2014. Abdullah's8 trip to Syria was financed by Kamel Hussain9, another ISIS recruiter who Abdullah 8 met on an internet forum. In addition to funding Abdullah 8, Hussain9 also funded the travels of Christopher Brewster10, a wayward Calgary youth. Abdullah8 and Christopher10 are both Twitter followers of Shamil Akhmadov11, a radical Chechen on the front lines of the conflict who frequently tweets pictures of the action as a means to recruit new fighters. Gustave Authier13, a radical Frenchman and another follower of Akhmadov 11, has his own Twitter account that he uses for spouting extremist rhetoric. Samiulla Kassab12, who lives in Berlin, follows both accounts. Stig Osterholt14 a Norwegian foreign fighter in Syria, has a blog that Akhmadov 11 often reads. He uses this blog to write eulogies for his comrades who have died while fighting in the Levant. It was Osterholt's14 writings that influenced Akhmadov to travel to Syria to fight. Akhmadov's11 most recent tweet was a picture of the martyred corpse of Harry Sudlow15, a 17-year old convert from London who was killed within his first week of arriving in Syria. Harry15 was radicalized after meeting Mohammed Irfhan7.

She founded the group with her two best friends, Nicole Leto4 and Susan Granger5. Dom 2 and Eric Gorman3, two brothers from Flowermound, also joined after fostering a rescue dog that they received from Frank Llewellyn1. Dom 2, Eric3, Nicole4, Susan 5, and Marsha6 comprise the primary ground team for animal rescue operations. Go Takahashi7, a local vet, also assists in the field. After the ground team secures an injured or abused animal, Go7 brings it to his boss, Linda Evans8, back at the veterinary clinic. Linda8 generously assigns either Dr. Warren Colantropo9 or Dr. Felicia Alvarez11 to perform any necessary surgeries. Following surgeries, Dr. Colantropo9 and Dr. Alvarez11 contact Hayley Dickens10, who fosters post-op animals during their recovery period. Occasionally, Dr. Alvarez11 will employ the help of Dr. Timothy Nager14, a veterinary surgeon from her previous clinic, to help in any particularly difficult operations. In addition to providing medical assistance, Dr. Alvarez11 also works on the All-fur-One website, uploading pictures and descriptions of rescued animals that are up for adoption. Lauren Colby12 and Jose Loreto13, who both work closely with Dr. Alvarez11, are the group's adoption coordinators. Both the medical and rescue operations are funded by donations. Julian Vespucci1 runs a powerful crime syndicate in Providence; however, in an effort to distance himself from any potential prosecution, he relies on his right-hand men, Emmett Alesi2 and Tim Piro3, to serve as his go-betweens with the syndicate's other members. In the uppermost tier are Stephen4 and Dean Balme5, brothers who help finance the syndicate by laundering money through a variety of local businesses. One such business, a travel agency, is also a front for a brothel run by Emile Marin6, who frequently services Alesi2 and Piro 3. A portion of money from the businesses of the Balme brothers4 & 5 and Marin6 contribute to the campaign funds for Francis Petracca7, a local councilman hand-picked by Alesi2 and Piro3 to covertly advocate for Vespucci's1 political interests in city affairs. Paul Merriman9, who served time in the '90s for drug possession, manufactures methamphetamine for the syndicate in a suburb just outside of the city limits. Bastion Willis10 deals the finished product in and around the city, while Merriman 9 delivers the proceeds to Norman Bibbo8, who is Councilman Petracca's7 personal assistant. Willis10 often sells drugs to Clive Mooney11, an arms dealer who also indirectly works for the syndicate and delivers weapons to Bibbo8. Mooney11 receives his gun shipments from Greg Toombs12 and Kyle Lenox13, who he met while serving time for armed robbery. Aside from the work he does in Providence, Mooney11 deals mostly to Joe Hackett14 who lives up in Boston. In addition to arms dealing, Mooney 11 is also sometimes contracted by the syndicate to carry out the 'wetwork' in extreme circumstances. Most recently, he was hired to kill Raphael Melendez15, a car salesman who witnessed Councilman Petracca7 receiving a bribe.

"You may have heard of the concept of "six degrees of separation." This is the idea that every person in the world is connected to every other person through a small number of relationships. "Six degrees" is based on the concept of networks. A network is a system of interconnected people as represented by nodes and links. Networks of people and their relationships are everywhere, including on the Internet, in professional settings, and even in your own family!

Knowing ins and outs of networks is an important skill. It can help you advance your career, make friends, and get to know your neighbors. We have created this test to measure your "NetIQ" --how good you are at seeing patterns in networks.

In the test, you will see a network. You will either get a written description of the network or a picture depicting what the network looks like. Your task is to use the materials to correctly answer all of the questions about the network. The quicker you give the right answers, the better!"

In this study, you will be working with a network that contains multiple nodes. You will receive either a written description of the network or a visualization depicting what the network looks like. You will also be given a list of questions pertaining to the network; some of which will address factors about the nodes, while others will address factors about the links. Your task is to use the provided materials to correctly answer all of the questions within the allotted time.

Terminology

Node -- A connection point within a network. In this study, a node represents a person.

Link -- The connection between two nodes. Also known as "edges." In this study, a link represents a relationship.

Hop -- A portion of the path between source and destination as represented by nodes. A question that asks how many "hops" it takes to get from one node to another is essentially asking how many nodes are encountered along the journey.

Cluster -- A group within a network where every person in the group is connected to every other person in the group.

Visualizations

Node-Link Diagram -- A type of data visualization that displays the connections between members of a network. In a node-link diagram, nodes are represented by circles and links are represented by lines that connect the circles. Alice - Dave - Eve is a 1 hop path.

1 hop path

Association Matrix -- A type of data visualization that displays the connections between members of a network. Unlike a node-link diagram, a matrix is set up as a table wherein each node corresponds to a row and a column. Links between members of the network are represented by filled-in cells at the intersection of one member's row with another member's column.

Adjacency Matrix -- A means of representing which vertices (or nodes) of a graph are adjacent to which other vertices.

Cluster -- A group within a network where every person in the group is connected to every other person in the group.

Connections Table -- A table showing the number of direct (one-hop) and indirect (two-hop) connections a person has.
