Consent Form

Key Information:

You are invited to volunteer for a research study conducted by the Couples and Households Lab, run by Jaclyn S. Wong, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of South Carolina. The purpose of this study is to understand how individuals assess the characteristics of common household tasks, and whether those assessments vary based on the characteristics of the scenario. If you decide to participate in this study, you will read and answer questions about four randomly assigned passages describing hypothetical people performing various household tasks. These passages will be followed by a short demographic survey. We expect this study to last no more than 20-30 minutes.

Risks/Discomforts:

Possible risks associated with the online survey are those associated with basic computer tasks, including fatigue, mild stress, or breach of confidentiality. Specific safeguards to protect confidentiality are described below. In the highly unlikely event that an adverse incident occurs, the primary researcher will notify the Institutional Review Board promptly.

Benefits:

Taking part in this study is not likely to benefit you personally. However, this research may help researchers better understand the nature of household tasks in contemporary households.

Payment:

You will not be paid for participating in this study.

Confidentiality of Records:

Information you provide in the survey during this research may be published, but your identity will not be linked to your survey answers. Information that is obtained during this research that can be identified with you will remain confidential to the extent possible within State and Federal law. Only the investigators associated with this study and the Institutional Review Board will have access to identifying information. Study information will be securely stored on password-protected computers.

Voluntary Participation:

Participation in this research study is voluntary. You are free not to participate, or to stop participating at any time for any reason without negative consequences. You may close your browser to exit the study. If you withdraw from this study, the information you have already provided will be kept confidential. If you wish to withdraw your data from the study, please email Jaclyn Wong at wongjs@mailbox.sc.edu.
