Please read the consent form carefully
We invite you to participate in a web-based online experiment on attention. The experiment should take around 15 minutes (no more than 30) to complete.
You must be at least 18 years old to participate in these experiments. The decision to participate in this research project is voluntary. You do not have to participate and you can refuse to answer any question. Even if you begin the web-based experiments, you can stop at any time by closing your browser.
There are no foreseeable risks or discomforts to you for taking part in this study. You will only be rewarded for completing the task not for the length of time you participate. You will be compensated for good faith participation in this experiment. Submitted HITs will be rejected if they are completed in a manner that appears to be random, incomplete, or otherwise negligent.
Your data will be handled in a confidential manner. The data you provide will be stored in a secure database and your responses will not be linked to your Turk worker ID. Your worker ID will only be used for payment. Non-identified data may be publicly shared on the Open Science Framework or a similar platform. The purposes of data sharing are to document the results reported in a paper and secondary analysis of the data by others.
If you have any questions about this study, please contact: Chloe Callahan-Flintoft, chloe.a.callahan-flintoft.civ@mail.mil
This study has been reviewed and approved by Army Research Laboratory (ARL).

Thank you for participating in this study! Your main task will be to hit the spacebar
every time you see an enemy (shown below).
Enemy
Half of the time it will be easy to spot an enemy because some friendly uniforms are dissimilar to enemy uniforms.

However, the other half of the time it will be hard to spot an enemy because some friendly uniforms are
similar to enemy uniforms.

As you can see, each character has the same pose. During the trial, characters will rapidly change pose in the center
of the screen, so make sure to pay close attention to the uniforms so you can react quickly when a target appears.

Sometimes when you are performing this task, a digit will flash somewhere on the screen. After it flashes,
you will be asked to report what, if any, digit you saw. This is an excellent time to take a break if need be.

You will now have the opportunity to practice on several trials that have been slowed down.
Keep in mind that in the actual experiment, characters will change pose more rapidly, and
there will be no callout to help you identify enemies. Press 'Next' to begin the practice.
You are now ready! Click 'Begin Experiment' to start the experiment. Alternatively, you may go back to re-read the
Instructions by clicking 'Back to Instructions,' or run through a practice set again by clicking 'Practice Again.'
